Mental health is a growing issue in all communities, however black children are disproportionally represented in mental health services, particularly in higher level units and face barriers to accessing care, including lower access to community service.
The statistics show children from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds wait longer when accessing services (https://www.healthwatch.co.uk/blog/2023 ) and receive poorer outcomes when services are received.
Sadly, we are seeing escalating numbers of children with deteriorating mental health and even the death of one young person, within the families supported by Families in Harmony.
I am extremely honoured to be training in Play therapy specialising in a range of therapeutic modalities, from the Institute of Caribbean play therapists, under the tutelage of Dr. Crawford Brown, world renowned, Clinical professor, migrant specialist, and author, originator of the Barell Children syndrome.
Caribbean Play Therapy, under Dr B in her specially designed play therapy space, allowed me to witness firsthand the integration of cultural storytelling, music, and diverse therapeutic approaches. This immersive experience created a rich cultural fusion that went beyond therapy alone.
Bringing this distinctive and groundbreaking style of play therapy to the UK through families in harmony is a privilege. It challenges the rigid conventions of mainstream therapy, offering Black clients a genuine space to express themselves freely, advancing positive change and restorative healing.
